Historic Ellicott City Spring Celebration Howard County Stand Up-Blue Pinky Project

11 06 2014

We welcomed in Spring with a BANG in Historic Ellicott City last month! Ellicott City held it’s annual Spring Festival which included several bands, artisans, vendors, craft beer gardens, children’s activities, yummy treats, and specials at the local shops, restaurants, salons and boutiques. The weather was just perfect – we had both sunshine and a breeze! It was such a glorious day!  Main Street was jam-packed with people of all ages enjoying themselves!

Here at Pam Long Photography, we championed HoCo’s Stand Up – Blue Pinky Project, which is Howard County’s anti-bullying campaign.  Keri, the Director of the County’s Office of Children’s Services (the office which oversees the county’s Stand Up HoCo campaign) and her daughter, Josie, came to our studio for several hours on Saturday to help us raise awareness about bullying. Keri provided literature that gave information about bullying and ways to prevent bullying, she brought anti-bullying bracelets that were given out, book marks, and lots of blue fingernail polish!!  We were able to paint over a hundred pinky fingernails blue, showing our stand against bullying. We even had some men who agreed to have their pinky nails painted and a few of our canine friends participated, as well. Check out all of the cute photos below!

A huge thank you to everyone that help prepare for this day, for those that initiated this campaign, for those that continue the push to spread the word, and for everyone that came out during Springfest and pledged against bullying!  I appreciate Jaki Ulman’s enormous efforts in partnering with StandUp HoCo to start Blue Pinky Project here in Howard County, MD. We are so very proud and thankful of all the efforts made!

Seems like Elvis coordinated his outfit that day in honor of Blue Pinky Project! 🙂

Our front porch was bursting with energy! We had our nail painting station and Stand Up HoCo info displayed on a table on the porch. The cool breeze carried the sounds from awesome live music up to us. We had A LOT of help that day from some of our incredible high school senior clients: Liana, Nikki, Lindsay, and Oru! THANK YOU, ladies!  Y’all are awesome! They greeted people and encouraged people on the street to come up and check out what was happening at Pam Long Photography! After people had their pinky nails painted, they were ushered into our beautiful studio where they could sign our anti-bully board! We got a TON of signatures! (Yay!!) We’re proud of everyone that has taken a stand against bullying! 🙂

Marianthy Mendez and Nala Jackson both won $100 toward a future session at Pam Long Photography! Sandra Barton won a $25 gift certificate for a manicure to Ooh la Lal. We appreciate your partnership.

Our blue pinky participants also had their photos taken in the studio, with our Stand Up HoCo sign, showing off their blue pinkies! It was such a fun, bustling day! We had several local politicians stop by our studio and support anti-bullying! Among them: Courtney Watson, Lisa Markovitz, Jon Weinstein,Tom Coale, and Chris Merdon. We had the pleasure of Lauren Ruth Ward help us paint pinkies! She is an incredible barber at Ooh la Lah and an extremely talented musician! Thank You again, Lauren! Stand Up HoCo
We are participating with Stand Up HoCo in their campaign to prevent bullying. We are very proud to be involved in helping raise awareness for this cause!  Stand Up HoCo’s campaign is designed to educate the community about what bullying is and what we can do to prevent it!  Their motto is: Don’t stand by, stand up! You can learn more about Stand Up HoCo by clicking here.

This project really struck a chord with me.  I have 2 beautiful daughters, ages 9 & 10, and I feel it’s vital that we keep communication open so they know that if there’s a challenge, we can help them work through it.   It scares me, and frankly saddens me, when I hear what is being said and written…and at such a young age!  I hope that by bringing more awareness, it’ll become easier for children to speak up, not only for themselves but for others.

HoCo has a new grassroots project, the Blue Pinky Project, which is led by Jaki Ulman. In particular, this project is designed to raise awareness of bullying among youth.  The Blue Pinky Project challenges members of our community to stand up for one another and promote respect.
🙂
How do you participate? Involvement in The Blue Pinky Project is simple: as you are enjoying the Spring Celebration, stop by our studio, get your pinky fingernail painted BLUE ( yes, guys do it, too) 🙂 and make a “pinky promise” to stand up to bullying!

Here is a link to this blogpost about the event, PLEASE feel free to Tweet it, Facebook it, shout it from the mountaintops.  http://wp.me/p4NWw-12Z Please, use #HoCoBluePinky and #pamlongphoto to help spread the word!

Need more incentive?: (Don’t worry; we have you covered) We will have awesome volunteers, some local celebrities, politicians, community leaders here to paint your pinkies!  Of course, we’ll take pictures all day and share them in social media.  Not only do we LOVE to help with charities and raise awareness for worthwhile causes, we also like to have FUN! SO, there will also be plenty of gift certificates and prizes that you can win via raffle! In addition, EVERYONE that participates that day, will receive a gift certificate to PAM LONG PHOTOGRAPHY for $50 to use toward a future session!!!!!

Pinky swear to see you here?!?! Please join us in championing StandUp HoCo’s anti-bullying campaign.

We hope you join us! We would love to see you!  We are looking forward to celebrating Spring and raising awareness for anti-bullying so that we can make this world a better place for our beautiful youth! Help us spread the word!
