Joan Eve’s remarkable and shocking flash flood survival story, Ellicott City, Maryland

28 08 2018

For the last several years, I’ve earned a living being a storyteller. Whether it’s through photographs or videos, I love to engage with my clients and share their stories. After the 2016 and 2018 devastating flash floods that tore to shreds Ellicott City’s Main Street in Maryland, I’ve had the privilege of sharing unbelievable personal stories of survival. Residents. Businesses. A commUNITY.

I have the honor of bringing you an astonishing story of survival and a glimpse of selfless humanity. Joan Eve, of Joan Eve Classics & Collectibles and her friend, Gary Weltner, share their harrowing accounts of the afternoon of May 27, 2018.  I hope you take the next 12 minutes and watch.

Joan Eve and Gary, thank you for the privilege of sharing your story. The trust you’ve placed in me is heartfelt and sincerely appreciated. Disclaimer: Have your tissues handy. #ECStronger

THANK YOU! Our Celebration of Smiles event was a SUCCESS!

10 05 2018

THANK YOU to everybody that supported our Celebration of Smiles event, our fundraiser for Operation Smile.

5x5 Ornate

Several thousand healthcare professionals volunteer their time with Operation Smile so that for as little as $240, children with cleft lips, cleft palettes and other facial deformities can receive much-needed surgery.  Our goal was to raise $720 so that three children could receive their operation. Thanks to the incredibly generous people that supported this cause, we exceeded our goal, YOU helped raise $886! Thank you!

I’d like to thank everybody that came into the studio for headshots, it was a wonderful, moving couple of days of raising money, I appreciate each of you! I loved hearing the stories people shared about why this particular fundraiser meant so much to them. Thank you, Rachel, for signing up your entire Salon Marielle staff, I loved the fun afternoon with you all! Thank you to my fellow business owners along Main Street that displayed my promotional posters and postcards! Thank you to everyone that shared our Facebook post letting people know of this great promotion. Thank you, Analisa Archer, for not only donating to the cause and receiving a new headshot, but for volunteering your day to assist me in the studio during this event!  Thank you, Mark Miller, for your generous donation to the cause and for bringing delicious snacks for all to enjoy. Thank you, Mark Hemmis, from The Phoenix Emporium for adding Operation Smile to your “Paying Forward/Paying Back” initiative. Thank you, Joan Eve for your generous donation and constant encouragement! Thank you, Lauren Ruth Ward, for donating part of your merch money from your east coast tour, you are amazing!

And a huge, very special thank you to PPA Charities for aligning yourself with tremendous organizations, I love that you continue your partnership with Operation Smile. I appreciate the legwork that you do and the support you lend the photographers in assisting them throughout the planning process, the execution of portrait day, and the follow up with our fundraising efforts! THANK YOU! You ROCK and I appreciate all that you do!

Catch our very special “Celebration of Smiles Day” Fundraiser on April 28th!

10 04 2018

It’s time to update your portrait!!

Pam Long Photography is participating in a very special fundraiser on Saturday, April 28, 2018. We will be hosting “Celebration of Smiles”, a wonderful opportunity for you to update individual portraits of your family members and at the same time support the work of Operation Smile.

Recording the smiles of children and their families is one of our greatest pleasures. That’s why we believe so strongly in the work of Operation Smile. Each year, this incredible organization of more than 5,000 volunteer doctors, nurses, dentists and specialized health care professionals, perform free reconstructive surgeries for children suffering from cleft lips, cleft palates, and other facial conditions.

A $24 donation is all it takes to have your individual portrait taken and to receive a 5×7 desk portrait! Each surgical procedure costs $240. So for every 10 people we photograph, a child receives the much-needed surgery!  Will you take advantage of this awesome offer and help these beautiful children? We’d like to raise enough money so that at least three children can receive surgical care from these incredible healthcare professionals. At Pam Long Photography, we only discount our session fees or products when we are fundraising. On Saturday, April 28th, you have the opportunity to receive a free 5×7 desk print for a minimum of $24 donation! That’s almost 1/5 of our normal price! And it all goes to this charity. And you don’t pay a session fee!  Hello?! What are you waiting for? Let’s have fun together recording YOUR smiles and raising money so those incredible children can smile too!

I love what Dr. Bill Magee and his wife, Kathy have to say about why they founded Operation Smile. I hope you take a moment to read their story, found here.

I hope you will join us Saturday, April 28th!  Contact us now, be amongst those 30 people!

FAQs:

Do I need to reserve my time? YES, absolutely! When we host these fundraisers, time slots fill quickly. We will reserve the time on our calendar that best suits your schedule and you will pay the donation fee(s) at that time. Example: If there are three people in your family participating in the fundraiser, we will reserve the 20-minute time slot and collect the $72 donation. Please keep in mind, first come, first served. Again, appointments will fill quickly!

What should we wear?  Great question. We will send you our special Tips and Suggestions to help guide you in preparing for your headshot!

Do we get to choose which photo we want or do you choose it for us? Of course! YOU get to view and choose which one(s) you’d like. Immediately after your session, you’ll see your images on the big screen and our staff will help you make your selections.

Do we choose the background? For this free session, we’ve chosen for it you. Our regular custom headshot sessions are designed specifically for your individual needs and can include a variety of backgrounds, including the beautiful outdoors. For this session, we are using a black background. For an extra charge, our retoucher can ‘extract’ you from the background, making it extremely easy to choose any digital background you may need. As a thank you for participating in this incredible fundraiser, you will receive a gift certificate for $25 off of a custom headshot session to use in the future.

Thank you for the gift of a 5×7, I will want additional copies, may I buy more? Absolutely!  We are happy to provide the 5×7 print as your gift, but it’s very common that people want additional prints for family members and their offices, and many times want the digital files for their images. You will have that option. Our regular prices are discounted for this fundraiser!

I need to update my LinkedIn profile…my website headshot…my dating site profile…my profile on my social media sites…my picture on my business card…if I buy the digital file may I use it for those purposes? YES! This is a fantastic opportunity to do so because the digital files are available for just $99 during this fundraiser (there’s even a greater, group discount if buying 3 or more)!

Can you take our family portrait while we’re there? Simple answer…perhaps. This fundraiser is specifically designed for individual portraits. IF time remains within your scheduled timeslot, I’m happy to do so, but my initial goal is to provide everyone with a fantastic, updated headshot. Each person or family that participates in our “Celebration of Smiles” Day will receive a gift certificate for $75 off a regular custom family portrait session to use in the future.

Can you take a portrait of my 3 children together instead of each one separately? With this particular fundraiser, PLP’s obligation to the charity is to provide one photograph for each person in exchange for the $24 donation. I would love the opportunity to schedule a custom portrait session with your family or children. As an additional thank you for participating in this fundraiser will receive a gift certificate for $75 off a regular custom family portrait session to use in the future. IF time remains within your scheduled timeslot, I’m happy to do so, but my initial goal is to provide everyone with a fantastic, updated headshot.

I know for your regular sessions our images are professionally retouched, will headshots taken during this promotion include retouching? Absolutely, yes! Your portraits will be handled with the same standard of excellence that our clients have grown accustomed to.

Sounds great, what do I do now? Contact us right away! We plan on photographing from 11:00am – 5:00pm on Saturday, 11/28. That leaves enough room for approximately 18-20 sessions.  And believe me, for a mini session and a 5×7 print in exchange for a $24 donation, the times will fill quickly. Call us at 410.988.5563. We are a busy, working studio, so if there is no answer then we are with clients, be sure to leave a message and follow up with an email to pam@pamlongphotography.com.

Along with other participating members of Professional Photographers of America (PPA), Pam Long Photography has pledged to donate 100% of each $24 donation made to PPA Charities, which has chosen Operation Smile as its charitable partner. We are looking forward to serving YOU and raising money together for Operation Smile. I’ve had the pleasure of working with PPA Charities for several years now and love the work they do and the partnerships they have formed with organizations like Operation Smile.

THANK YOU!

Maya’s Senior Portraits

22 02 2016

Okay, seriously, I think somebody put the word out there that you should not have your senior pictures taken unless you’re beautiful on the inside and kind and fun and smart and cool and well mannered and everything else that involves goodness! I think back to all of the high school senior portraits I’ve created and I have determined that parents are doing a wonderful job growing some great young adults! 🙂 I’m so impressed!

Maya is no exception! She is beautiful!! She’s a Class of 2016 high school senior at Howard High School. And what a pleasure to spend the afternoon with Maya and her gorgeous mom.

As you’ll see from her senior portraits, we had fun in our portrait studio as well as along Main Street, outside of our studio. I really love the variety of senior portraits that they chose from her photo shoot.

Alayna’s Senior Portraits

30 11 2015

This beautiful Class of 2016 high school senior came to me from Glenelg Country School. She’s a fun loving, caring, goal-oriented young lady and I’m proud to her as a member of our Spokesmodel Team.

As you can can tell from her portraits, Alayna has a love for horses and is quite an accomplished equestrian. She competes in Eventing, which combines three different disciplines, dressage, cross country and show jumping! She’s amazing to watch!

She also enjoys playing basketball and is a member of the Garden Club, Spirit Club and Ambassadors Club!

For Alayna’s senior portraits, she participated in our Spokesmodel Day at the studio and we also enjoyed an afternoon  on her farm! Huge thanks goes to her beautiful mom, Melissa, for helping coordinate everything and for the fun golf cart ride while we moved from location to location, each so beautiful! 🙂

Following are some of Alayna’s senior portraits. She has a beautiful album that will be treasured for generations, I’ve included some of the album spreads. I hope you enjoy!

Alayna, your beauty shines from within and I hope when you look at your senior pictures, for years to come, that you are reminded of what a special person you are. Always keep your kind heart, your love of adventure, and your drive. Thank you for choosing Pam Long Photography. It was my pleasure creating your senior portraits.

#ShopSmall in Historic Ellicott City!

28 11 2015

Let’s face it, nobody likes driving around a busy parking lot, looking for a space to park only to find one and somebody from the opposite direction snags it from you. 😦 This time of year you aim to get somewhere early to avoid blowing though half a tank of gas driving around…and around…and around the parking lots looking for that one empty space.  Well, Historic Ellicott City has a solution for you!

Do you know about the stairs that connect Main Street to the Courthouse Parking lot?  It’s as if a new parking garage was built without the nuisance of a new parking garage being built! 🙂     Thank you, Lyndsey, for helping me showcase the Ellicott City Stairs!                                        Ellicott City Stairs Steps to Courthouse Pam Long Photography

These stairs lead you to hassle free parking! Located upper Main, behind the The Ellicott Mills Brewing Company and close to The Wine Bin, the stairs serve as a great solution to parking challenges and may be used in the evening and weekends. Gone are your parking issues! Now you can easily support your local small businesses knowing that you’ll have plenty of parking on weekends!

Check out how fast you can get to Main Street when you park at the Courthouse:

Along with the newer parking option, Historic Ellicott City has several different parking areas along with street parking. You can find the specific lots listed here.

Here’s Howard County Councilman, District 1, Jon Weinstein and Howard County’s County Executive, Allan Kittleman, at the top of the stairs (nobody was blinded by the sun in the making of this photo 🙂 ).

Ellicott City’s Historic District is a wonderful shopping destination with a diverse offering of goods, services and restaurants and is home to a thriving art community.  You can find a list of businesses and events here.

Rachel Rawlings, manager of Salon Marielle, 8239 Main Street, shared with me, “Our salon guests love having the option of parking at the courthouse and taking the stairs. Especially during busier times like during our wonderful festivals. It’s a beautiful view and walk down from the top of town.”

Our charming town provides a plethora of choices for you and you’ll be certain to find the perfect gifts for your loved ones.

Here’s how Richard Ellsberry, an Ellicott City resident, feels about the addition of the stairs, “For me, any long-term solid infrastructure is a good thing, and those stairs are going to be there in a hundred years. They look great & help with storm water management.”

Not only do these stairs help us by providing an entire new parking option, but as Richard mentioned, they have a phenomenal other purpose. Check out this amazing video, made by Cecilia Lane!
