Honoring Vivian “Millie” Bailey.

Millie Bailey Framed Portrait Pam Long Photography 2

Happy Veterans Day. On this and every day, I want to thank all veterans.  THANK YOU, and your families, for your service and for your sacrifices.

Today I want to especially honor Ms. Vivian “Millie” Bailey.  Ms. Bailey served as a lieutenant in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II.

Ms. Bailey is 101 years old.  She is one of the most inspirational people I’ve spent time with these past few years. She’s obviously beautiful, but she’s also generous with her kindness and time, she’s quite funny and very quick witted, refreshingly honest, upbeat and positive, her energy level is off the charts, simply put…she’s EXTRAORDINARY!

Ms. Bailey, I salute you and all those who have served, and those who continue to serve. Because of your sacrifice and bravery, we enjoy many freedoms.  Thank you for the example you set for us all.

Millie deserves your time to read every word that these beautiful people have written about her.  I know you’ll enjoy learning more about her as you read along.

Relentless but kind and compassionate in her efforts to help people:  Millie would frequently call the police department to get names of officers who were deployed so she could send care packages.  I would tell her I would get back with the names the next day.  Of course, sometimes I would get busy and forget.  By noon the next day, I recognized the number on caller ID.  Millie said, “I know you are busy and may have forgotten, but I need the officers’ names so I can get my packages to the Post Office later today.”  Of course, I stopped what I was doing immediately and got those names! While I knew she has sent packages for years, I didn’t realize until recently that she has been sending packages since the Vietnam War.  A simple example of the kindness and compassion she has for people she doesn’t even know.  She is truly a saint.

Humor:  Alarm at house When Millie lived on West Running Brook she accidentally activated the home alarm one day.  She called the Police Dispatch Center and told the dispatcher there was no need to send an officer.  The dispatcher explained that we must send an officer to verify everything was ok.  I happened to be in the area and responded.  When I arrived, Millie was outside waiting.  She was happy to see someone she knew because she was embarrassed.  She told me that she tried to cancel the call.  I told her it was policy that I needed some identification to verify her identity.  She smiled and promptly responded that she would be right back after she called Chief Robey.  Millie knew everyone in the County, and she could get things done quickly.  We had a good laugh together.

Millie is always great with advice: Recently when I picked Millie up for lunch, I asked her if she was ok to go out in the cold.  She told me it doesn’t bother her and there’s no sense complaining about things you can’t control.  Millie said, “You must learn how to work through things you can’t control!”      Advice well taken…I couldn’t argue that point!

Final Thought:  Millie is simply an incredible person filled with love and kindness for everyone she meets.  In consideration of some adversity she has experienced in her lifetime, it’s amazing to see the enormous compassion and positivity she expresses to people every day.  She is rarely in a bad mood and brings a smile to your face every time you meet her.  God Bless Millie!

Over a span of more than 40 years, I  have loved the countless times I sat across the kitchen table from my dear friend, Millie Bailey – both in her Running Brook home and her Vantage House home. We spoke of life and love and courage and wisdom and friendship. My grandson, Zach, loved Millie very much. I have learned so much from her – including how to “walk that walk“, although she said I wasn’t a very good student on that one.

My times with Millie are among the most treasured moments of my life.

~Liz Bobo, Former County Executive and member of Maryland House of Delegates

Vivian “Millie” Bailey has accomplished more in her lifetime than anyone else I know….and she shows no signs of slowing down.  Through her service during World War II, her longtime work with the Howard County Police Department and Howard County General Hospital, her volunteer service at Running Brook Elementary School, and the Care Packages she organizes to send to those in the military serving overseas (just to name a few of her activities), Millie has touched and influenced many, many people.  However, when you speak with Millie, you see right away that it has not been about her.  Her only motive is to make our community and country a better place for everyone.  Millie has a huge heart and I am honored to be have been able to work with her and to call her my friend.”

~Allan Kittleman, Former County Executive, Former Maryland State Senator

I have had the privilege to know Millie Bailey from my first months on the police department in 1984.  Mr. and Mrs. Bailey and I hit it off right away, and we became close friends.  I continue to enjoy the position of “adopted nephew” to my Aunt Millie.

My late grandmother was in her eighties when I introduced the ladies to each other.  We went to Clyde’s at Aunt Millie’s suggestion.  The ladies talked over cream of crab soup for more than two hours, and they were friends thereafter, getting together for lunches and other visits.

Years later, “Bubbles,” as we called her, needed hip replacement surgery, and her operation was scheduled to take place at Howard County General Hospital, where Aunt Millie served on the Board of Directors.  The ladies shared the same orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Eugene Willis, whom Aunt Millie knew well enough to call “Pebbles.”

The surgery was scheduled to be Dr. Willis’s first of the early morning, and we were to arrive at the hospital for registration and prep work by 4:45am.  Yes, AM.  We arrived not a moment early.  As we stepped into the intake room, there was Aunt Millie, paging through a magazine.  I’ll paraphrase: “Well, I was just about to have them call you to make sure that you woke up!”  Astonished, we couldn’t believe that Aunt Millie was there to support her friend and wish her well.  She stayed until the last possible minute, and then made me promise to keep her informed of Bubbles’ progress.  I did so.  One does not let Aunt Millie down.  It’s just a fact of nature.

The surgery went well, and Dr. Willis told me to go about my business and to not return until at least 2:00pm, when Bubbles would be awake and alert.  At 2:00, I went to her assigned room, and I found two empty beds, obviously unused.  When your ninety-plus year-old grandmother just went through major surgery and you find an empty bed, your mind goes to the worst possible scenario.  I was relieved to find out that there had been a room change, and I went to the new room.  As I approached, I could hear Bubbles’ voice (Whew!).

I opened the door to find that Bubbles was in a beautiful, private VIP room with huge windows, and she was talking with the Executive Chef of the hospital.  Pad and pencil in hand, he was asking what she might like for dinner.  “What are my choices?”  “Anything you wish, ma’am, just name it.”

We talked for a few minutes, and Bubbles fell back to sleep.  Aunt Millie arrived shortly thereafter.  Again, I’ll paraphrase: “Bubbles spent forty-five years as a doctor, taking care of sick children, and never asked for anything special in return.  She deserves to be treated well, and she will be, if I have anything to say about it.”

“By the way, Vic Broccolino will be in to check on her later.  I’ll be back tomorrow.  She needs her rest.  Don’t stay too long.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

In a lifetime it is rare to come across someone like Miss Bailey, who I have come to know as Millie, that can fill up places in your heart you never knew existed. To make assumptions based upon her small frame is a grave mistake and one corrected within a short time of being in her presence. To spend time with her is to is know the mighty strength of intellect, grace, perseverance, sense of justice and determination of a beautiful woman who has walked our planet for nearly 102 years. However, it is the continued spirit of a giving heart and doing something kind each day that fuels her to connect to those both locally and around the globe through her care package initiative for the troops, field trip support for our children, and tireless advocacy to fill our food bank. Her lessons to me are a treasured gift that I take to heart.  Every day Millie’s spirit inspires me to think bigger, do more, be bolder, go bravely and strive to bring as much joy and compassion to this world that I can.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Ms. B for about six years now.  We are both military Veterans and met during our initiation ceremony into the local American Legion Post.  Sitting next to me at that ceremony was this woman who had served as a 1st LT in the Women’s Army Corps, U.S. Army, during World War II.  Not only that – which is significant enough in its own right – but she also achieved the position of Unit Commander, Women’s Colored Detachment #2 at Fort Benning, Georgia.  Her stories of those times should be recorded in the history books.  And that was just the early years of her life.  That same intelligence, professionalism, and competence were present in the rest of her accomplished career and it continues to this day in everything she does.  Ms. Bailey has been an inspiration to me since that first day and continues as a role model on how to live a principled and meaningful life.  Being in her orbit is to truly learn about grace, perseverance, honor and moral courage. Ms. B is a treasure to her country, her community and all those who have the privilege of knowing her.

She is a such a treasure to our community. I know she has served on a variety of boards and commissions, including the Police Foundation, where she was such a force for ensuring that our Police Department and community had a healthy, respectful and productive relationship.

What has struck me even more than these “official” volunteer activities, however, is the example she has given to us of the power of one person to make a difference in relatively small ways. Her commitment to Running Brook ES and leveraging others to assist shows the power of what one person can do… independent of any formal organization. The same is true for of her military care packages, which we assisted with the Sheriff’s Office.

She is smart, funny, persistent, fiercely loyal, demanding and compassionate. I will sum up my feelings like this….there are many people who I respect. There are very few I fear disappointing. She is on that list.

~Bill McMahon, Former Howard County Chief of Police, Former Howard County Sheriff

**

I think the secret to Miss Millie’s longevity is that she puts others first: needy school children, deployed military and hungry Howard County residents plus many more. She also has a special ability to recruit others to help her with her projects. There is a Miss Millie community led by Millie Bailey that does a lot of good things in Howard County! She loves doing all these projects and working with people in her community. And, the community loves her!

Millie Bailey…. Who knew a young girl growing up in Oklahoma would years later change lives for so many in Howard County, Maryland and truly so many other places in the world?

Millie’s home is filled with trophies, certificates and awards from our grateful community because her heart is filled with love, grace, compassion and hope for tomorrow for those who find themselves struggling today.

I know Millie from the work she has done at the Community Action Council and her boundless spirit of giving to the Howard County Food Bank and our housing program.  These programs are there to lend a helping hand to those who find themselves face to face with a crisis.  And the programs are sustainable because of generous supporters like Vivian Bailey who are the true unsung heroes behind these operations.

Millie’s words at the Holland Awards Dinner will always stay with me “we can each do a little more…its that simple.”

Vivian Bailey makes it easy to love, to embrace, to give, and to imagine a world where we all got each other’s backs.

~Bita Dayhoff, President, Community Action Council of Howard County

**

Millie has a strength and grace that is consistent and unwavering. She is sharp, witty, and fun, as well. She is a true friend to me, through actions and words, as she is to her local and armed forces communities. I am honored to know her, I appreciate her service to the country, and I am lucky to call her my friend.

~Rebecca Norlander

**

Millie is not only a great American, but a warm and wonderful human being. She cares deeply about our country and her community. While many people her age are content to sit back and let others do the work, Millie – a Veteran herself – continues to support our troops serving overseas by providing care packages that she puts together herself, thanks to the donations she solicits from friends and the community. The vets love Ms. Millie and the touch loving of “home” she sends their way.

A very special thank you to everyone who contributed and shared your thoughts about beautiful Ms. Bailey.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It breaks my heart thinking of the lives lost that evening, thinking of the people that suffered, thinking of how powerful the water raged that evening to cause such destruction. So many residents have been displaced and business owners and employees without income because of a two hour span of time!
I will be writing more blogposts about the progress made these past few weeks, but I want to take a moment and thank the county leaders for guiding this mission to help the residents, business owners, building owners and employees of Historic Ellicott City come back stronger. Thank you, Allan Kittleman for your leadership and communication. As progress has evolved, you have continually kept us informed. Thank you, Jon Weinstein, for being here every step of the way, and for immediately turning around, after landing in Spain for your much deserved vacation, to come back and be with us. Thank you to our state leaders for your assistance, thank you Governor Hogan. To the police for working around the clock helping to keep our town secure, thank you. To all of the emergency personnel for everything you’ve done and continue doing, thank you. To Maureen Sweeney-Smith, Karen Besson, Tom Coale and the ECP Board for being beyond awesome while working hard for us. To all of the county workers, working so hard bringing our town back, thank you. I’d like to thank the volunteers and the organizers for all of their time and resources they’ve invested in helping everyone in need, you are AH-MAZING! To the people and businesses that have donated supplies to help with the clean up venture, thank you! To everyone that has donated to http://www.helpellicottcity.com, thank you! To everyone that has donated to personal gofundme pages, thank you. To the neighbors helping neighbors, you are amazing, thank you. To everyone that has shared info and events on social media, raising awareness, thank you. To all of the many businesses hosting fundraisers, thank you. For the young ones having lemonade stands and bake sales, thank you. To the many friends and strangers that booted up and shoveled through stores, helping the business owners, thank you. To my daughters who understood, without getting upset, when we had to cancel our mini vacation, thank you. There are so many people to thank, and again, I’ll write more on that subject, but thank you for keeping the beautiful people of our town in your thoughts and prayers. I’m blessed to be a part of our wonderful commUNITY.
These two photos were taken by my building owner, Ron Peters. Unfortunately, he had three properties damaged by the flood. I appreciate Ron’s endless desire to work swiftly and efficiently to get his tenants back in his houses and buildings. He got the necessary work done and inspectors in asap in order to restore some sort of normalcy for his tenants so they could move back home! I’m happy that the tenants in the Howard House are back in their apartments and his commercial renters can be open for business! I’m fortunate that you are my landlord! Thank you, Ron!! You ROCK!
This is the first day that I headed in to check out the studio.
“Paint Down Main” Quick Draw Event, Historic Ellicott City
20 08 2016
On July 9, 2016, talented (& calm) artists created artwork that they painted in historic downtown Ellicott City during a TWO hour period.  “Paint Down Main”, Quick Draw competition was held on a hot, but beautiful, Saturday morning and it was an AMAZING event to watch! “Paint Down Main” Quick Draw event is within the Paint It! Ellicott City Plein Air Event. How awesome for spectators to witness a piece of art created and completed in such a short amount of time!
The sponsors of this creative and challenging event were Mat About You Custom Framing & Gallery, Ellicott City Partnership (ECP), Howard County Arts Council, Howard County Tourism.
At noon, the blow of the horn sounded, signaling the finish time, painters gathered at the Howard County Tourism lot, displayed their artwork and waited patiently 🙂 while the jurors judged their art. Judges Steve Stannard of Steve Stannard’s Salient Group,  Char Randolph of ClayGround and Sara Arditti, of Still Life Fine Art Gallery, chose winners in the competition for cash prizes. Patrons could then purchase their favorite painting directly off the easel or visit the Paint Down Main exhibit during the Ellicott City 2nd Sunday Art Market, held at Mat About You Gallery on July 10th.
This awesome event is the brainchild of Chuck Gruss of Mat About You, “We hold this event to give the town’s visitors, a chance to see a piece of art work come together from start to finish.  It’s not too often someone gets a chance to see that happen in a such a short amount of time”.
Last year, 2015, was the inaugural year and welcomed 33 participants competing for $600 in cash prizes! This year, 2016, there were 48 participants competing for $1200 in cash prizes!! Mat About you Custom Framing and Gallery, Ellicott City Partnership and Chesapeake Fine Art Studio all donated toward the cash prizes.
Winners from the “Paint Down Main” Quick Draw;
1st Place “Main Street Ellicott City” by Alison Leigh Menke
2nd Place “Little House, Big Woods” by Courtney E. Lee
3rd Place “Wired” by Ray Ewing
-Under 18 Winner “Oriental Rugs” by Ashley Hof
-Under 18 Honorable Mentions, “Park” by Laila Lowery and “City Shop” by Jonathan Storch
-People’s Choice “Old Columbia Pike” by Tara Will
This is one of the many cultural events held in Historic Ellicott City throughout the year. I am looking forward to having our street back and rockin’ the events again!
As I walked around the Quick Draw boundaries, searching for painters, I was in complete awe with what I saw.  Each painter interpreted their views so differently and every single one of them, so magnificently. I loved seeing the many different techniques the artists displayed, the different interpretations of the same landscape. The unique color choices, some muted, some vibrant. Yet they all had something in common, they each produced incredible and beautiful pieces of art.
I hope you enjoy these photos.
Thank you to everyone involved! Hope to see you next year!
5th Anniversary of Power of the Purse – 2016 – A HUGE Success!
14 07 2016
POTP-5th-anniversary-web1
On Monday, June 13th, Blossoms of Hope held their fifth annual Power of the Purse silent auction and sale. This wonderful event was held in support of the Claudia Mayer/Tina Broccolino Cancer Resource Center at Howard County General Hospital. For the past five years this event has courteously been held at the Sub-Zero and Wolf Showroom by Fretz, located in Columbia.
2016 POTP Pam Long Photography (61 of 191)
In 2015 over 1,400 gently used and vintage purses were generously donated from individuals all over the state. As 2016 approached, goals and ambitions of collecting more bags were higher than ever. With great pride, I am able to say this year over 2,900 purses were donated and the event received more than $50,000 in donations from local businesses for the Silent Auction! This event is largely remarkable in the way it brings the community together.
There is no better person to bring camaraderie and resources to events than Michelle Wildman, owner of MW Events, a 16-year old business that specializes in Galas, fundraisers, and uniquely entertaining parties. Michelle was this year’s Chairperson for the Power of the Purse and worked countless hours for the past year preparing for this successful fundraiser. You’ve heard the expression, “if you want to get something done, give it to a busy person”?  Michelle surrounded herself with busy, organized and helpful volunteers that she guided throughout the process with informative and detailed emails, ensuring great communication. Michelle organized meetings, luncheons, and creative get togethers throughout the year to continually keep everyone informed and excited. These get togethers weren’t opportunities to only mingle, Michelle had a purpose for each scheduled date, checking items off her major list each month! The words AMAZING, TREMENDOUS, RESOURCEFUL, CONVINCING ;-), INCREDIBLE only begin to describe Michelle and her giving heart and brilliant mind!
Below, Michelle is pictured with her awesome and supportive family. 🙂
Michelle is not one to bring attention to herself, she lifts everyone up around her, “Last year we had 16 volunteers, and this year the team grew to 50 wonderfully hard-working women! The success of Power of the Purse directly correlates to the enthusiasm and dedication of these ladies, who took time away from their families to support such an important cause. I enjoyed hosting fun activities and outings in addition to our meetings, and it was a pleasure to watch new friendships form while we learned about one another’s businesses and passions.
Thanks to such a fabulous team, our 5th anniversary event welcomed more than 500 attendees, and not only beat our fundraising goal, but nearly doubled it, bringing in $36,000 to benefit Blossoms of Hope! Over the past 11 years, Blossoms has donated over $275,000 to the Claudia Mayer/Tina Broccolino Cancer Resource Center, and we look forward to adding to that total after this year’s success.”                                                              2016 POTP Pam Long Photography (72 of 191)
Working hand in hand with this event for the fifth year in a row is The Iron Bridge Wine Co. who provided the attendees with a tasteful assortment of both red and white wines. Alongside the wines, this years event had a tasty signature cocktail called the “Purse-onalitini” made of a special and tasty secret recipe, provided by Clever Container. Following drinks, Carrabba’s Italian Grill filled the air with delicious aromas featuring shrimp lightly drizzled in a lemon butter sauce, penne pasta with fresh tomato red sauce, Chicken Marsala and many other mouth watering treats. Not only did Carrabba’s have a counter full of these amazing dishes, but throughout the event servers made their way around the room to serve hors d’oeuvres, appetizers and then desserts.
Howard High School Twins Portrait Session
24 06 2016
What a FUN and GREAT time I had with these twin (graduated) high school seniors during their photo shoot! These two seniors are a FANTASTIC reason for mom and dad to be proud! I was very impressed with them during their portrait session and ordering session.They got along so well with each other :-), had fun and laughed with one another, they’re both respectful and an absolute blast to be around! These Class of 2016 Seniors from Howard High School have a tremendous future in front of them.
They have a trio of wall portraits displayed in their home, here is one of their pieces of artwork.Brother and sister formal portrait photographer Howard County Pam Long Photography studio Ellicott City MD
Can’t you tell by their expressions that they are awesome young adults?
I’m so glad that I was able to talk mom into getting in the photo with her kids! She was hesitant, but agreed. 🙂 As you can tell, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Tolani, thank you so very much for the trust you’ve placed in me to create these portraits of your beautiful children. You all have much to be proud of and I hope each time you look at their portraits on your walls that all of their wonderful qualities shine through.
Thank you! xo
Ashleigh’s senior portraits in Historic Ellicott City
2 05 2016
Many people think that high school senior portraits need to be taken during the summer, prior to the student’s senior year. And, for many of seniors, they are! We, at Pam Long Photography, do meet with a lot of our seniors during the summer, fall and winter of their senior year. All of the high schools have different deadlines for yearbook picture submissions; so if a senior has us creating the traditional drape or tux image, timing is definitely dictated by those deadlines.  Our schools in Howard County, MD have deadlines that are spread out from beginning of December, through mid April! I love the flexibility that gives us and allows us to work with these high school students throughout the entire year. We offer a limited number of sessions each week, and it’s awesome that these families can schedule their session when it fits in to their busy schedule as well as ours!
Ashleigh’s mom had contacted us because her daughter had seen some of our senior portraits of her friends. I was thrilled to meet with them during their portrait consultation. Through talking with her and discussing her style, and having her look through several of our senior photos, I knew which direction we’d take Ashleigh. We eagerly set the date for her senior portrait session!
The snowy, windy, winter weather prevented us from meeting for her portrait session a couple of different times, but when we were able to get together, we had a FUN photo shoot! 🙂 Ashleigh was able to fall in to any pose so easily and naturally. The different facial expressions that I asked for seemed effortless on her part….she was really incredible in front of the camera, quite natural.
Ashleigh and Kim, thank you for choosing Pam Long Photography! I’m glad you’re thrilled with your senior portraits, I enjoyed working with you so much, truly such an honor! Plus, my abs got a great workout from all of the laughter! 😀
Brian’s senior portrait session in Ellicott City!!
21 04 2016
Brian is a Class of 2016 high school senior from Mt Hebron High School.
When Brian’s mom contacted me about taking her son’s senior portraits, it was a very familiar conversation. Throughout his entire school year he expressed no interest in having his senior pictures taken. I know I’ve said this before, but most senior guys come to our photography studio because ‘mom wants the pictures’ (but then thankfully, they leave realizing how fun it is) :-). But this time, it was a little different from the normal script. Brian had seen some portraits that we had created of other seniors and specifically of some very talented musicians, and he liked them! YAY!  He had a change of heart and wanted senior portraits after all! Brian is an extremely gifted and dedicated musician, he’s an extraordinary bassoon player. And with the marching band, he plays the saxophone!
In addition to Brian’s musical accomplishments, he’s also a member of the National Honor Society. And, as if academics and music aren’t enough, he works as a life guard and swim instructor!  He’s been accepted and will be attending University of Maryland in the Fall where he’ll be a Music and Computer Science major! Congratulations, Brian! 🙂
Of course we created the formal portrait for him but he was interested in some casual photos as well.
I love these words that Lisa, Brian’s mom, shared with me, “These pictures of Brian warm my heart; the essence of his talent shines in his eyes. I am so proud of his accomplishments. I wish for Brian to continue to follow his passion; and success and happiness will always be his.”
Brian was very enjoyable to work with, he had great input and felt comfortable sharing his expectations.
Extended family portraits!
17 03 2016
This wonderful family came into our portrait studio during the holidays. Grandma and Grandpa, two sisters and their beautiful families. Lori, one of the sisters, is local to Ellicott City, MD. She contacted me to create their new extended family portraits and we were able to get together to achieve that during the holidays!
Lori remembered that we had done a fundraiser for her friend’s son that had recently been diagnosed with leukemia. We had held “Chase-ing Away Cancer”, offering mini portrait sessions  and we had the honor and immense privilege of photographing 14 families on a beautiful Sunday in November! 🙂 We’ll be blogging and sharing great photos about that eventually. I was happy to schedule Lori’s extended family portrait session and add to the fundraising efforts for the Wheatley family.
I had a great time with this family and enjoyed hanging out with all of them. I loved watching them interact together, they joked, they laughed and I really enjoyed the vibe they all had with one another. Following their portrait session, the men and kids went shopping along Historic Ellicott City’s Main Street while Lori, her sister Becca and mom, Karen, sat down to choose their favorite portraits.
I hope you enjoy their family portraits. If you’re reading this, please ask yourself this question: When was the last time you had your family portrait taken? Has it been more than a year or 2? Then please get hold of a photographer and schedule a portrait session for you and your family. Of course, I’d love for you to call Pam Long Photography, but if you already have a photographer, please consider contacting him or her and get your family’s portrait sessions scheduled! 🙂
