Pam Long Photography reopens!!

24 08 2016

EXCITING NEWS!

Pam Long Photography will reopen TODAY, Wednesday, August 24, 2016! We are thrilled to be back in our studio again!!

Please contact me to set up your appointment! We are excited to work again and we appreciate your patience since the devastating flood that raged through Historic Ellicott City, July 30, 2016. If you’ve ever considered having me photograph your family, high school senior or your pets, this is a GREAT time to call! 🙂  We will have an amazing time creating beautiful portrait art for you to enjoy for years to come. And remember, we provide business portraits if you’re in need of an updated headshot!

85% of our portraits have been created in our studio or along Main Street, using our beautiful town, buildings and river as backdrops. Though we will not, at this time, have access to Main Street, we do have access to other incredible locations until Main Street reopens. I’m looking forward to creating breathtaking and impressive portraits with you, whether it’s in our studio or on location. Guaranteed fun, no matter where we are! I appreciate the generosity of so many people offering their gorgeous locations for my outdoor sessions.

Please note, access to my studio will be through the back of our building via Church Road, by appointment only, and you’ll be escorted into our ‘gated community’ :-)!

I truly appreciate everyone that has reached out to me this past month. Your words of encouragement have meant the world to me. While I’m thrilled to be working again, I look forward to the day when I see my fellow businesses and residents right back where they belong. xo

I’d like to extend a very special thank you to Pam Mason of Mason and Friends and to Regina Ford and Pete Mangione of Turf Valley Resort and to Kristin (leaving her last name off because it’s her personal property) for offering to share your space, with me and my clients, while mine was not available. You were a special light that shone during a very uncertain time.

Thank you to everybody for your heartfelt messages that you’ve sent! Thank you to friends, my husband and daughters for helping me get my studio up to snuff these past few weeks, I couldn’t be opening today without your help! 🙂 I’ve said many times, that I’m one of the more fortunate ones, with minor damage.  Having said that, it hasn’t been easy in the least. But, I’m looking forward to rECharging, starting TODAY! #ECStrong #rECover
I’m looking forward to hearing from you. 410.988.5563 or pam@pamlongphotography.com
THANK YOU!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It breaks my heart thinking of the lives lost that evening, thinking of the people that suffered, thinking of how powerful the water raged that evening to cause such destruction. So many residents have been displaced and business owners and employees without income because of a two hour span of time!
I will be writing more blogposts about the progress made these past few weeks, but I want to take a moment and thank the county leaders for guiding this mission to help the residents, business owners, building owners and employees of Historic Ellicott City come back stronger. Thank you, Allan Kittleman for your leadership and communication. As progress has evolved, you have continually kept us informed. Thank you, Jon Weinstein, for being here every step of the way, and for immediately turning around, after landing in Spain for your much deserved vacation, to come back and be with us. Thank you to our state leaders for your assistance, thank you Governor Hogan. To the police for working around the clock helping to keep our town secure, thank you. To all of the emergency personnel for everything you’ve done and continue doing, thank you. To Maureen Sweeney-Smith, Karen Besson, Tom Coale and the ECP Board for being beyond awesome while working hard for us. To all of the county workers, working so hard bringing our town back, thank you. I’d like to thank the volunteers and the organizers for all of their time and resources they’ve invested in helping everyone in need, you are AH-MAZING! To the people and businesses that have donated supplies to help with the clean up venture, thank you! To everyone that has donated to http://www.helpellicottcity.com, thank you! To everyone that has donated to personal gofundme pages, thank you. To the neighbors helping neighbors, you are amazing, thank you. To everyone that has shared info and events on social media, raising awareness, thank you. To all of the many businesses hosting fundraisers, thank you. For the young ones having lemonade stands and bake sales, thank you. To the many friends and strangers that booted up and shoveled through stores, helping the business owners, thank you. To my daughters who understood, without getting upset, when we had to cancel our mini vacation, thank you. There are so many people to thank, and again, I’ll write more on that subject, but thank you for keeping the beautiful people of our town in your thoughts and prayers. I’m blessed to be a part of our wonderful commUNITY.
These two photos were taken by my building owner, Ron Peters. Unfortunately, he had three properties damaged by the flood. I appreciate Ron’s endless desire to work swiftly and efficiently to get his tenants back in his houses and buildings. He got the necessary work done and inspectors in asap in order to restore some sort of normalcy for his tenants so they could move back home! I’m happy that the tenants in the Howard House are back in their apartments and his commercial renters can be open for business! I’m fortunate that you are my landlord! Thank you, Ron!! You ROCK!
This is the first day that I headed in to check out the studio.
I hope to hear from you soon and look forward to creating beautiful works of art with you!
Thank you!
“Paint Down Main” Quick Draw Event, Historic Ellicott City
20 08 2016
On July 9, 2016, talented (& calm) artists created artwork that they painted in historic downtown Ellicott City during a TWO hour period.  “Paint Down Main”, Quick Draw competition was held on a hot, but beautiful, Saturday morning and it was an AMAZING event to watch! “Paint Down Main” Quick Draw event is within the Paint It! Ellicott City Plein Air Event. How awesome for spectators to witness a piece of art created and completed in such a short amount of time!
The sponsors of this creative and challenging event were Mat About You Custom Framing & Gallery, Ellicott City Partnership (ECP), Howard County Arts Council, Howard County Tourism.
At noon, the blow of the horn sounded, signaling the finish time, painters gathered at the Howard County Tourism lot, displayed their artwork and waited patiently 🙂 while the jurors judged their art. Judges Steve Stannard of Steve Stannard’s Salient Group,  Char Randolph of ClayGround and Sara Arditti, of Still Life Fine Art Gallery, chose winners in the competition for cash prizes. Patrons could then purchase their favorite painting directly off the easel or visit the Paint Down Main exhibit during the Ellicott City 2nd Sunday Art Market, held at Mat About You Gallery on July 10th.
This awesome event is the brainchild of Chuck Gruss of Mat About You, “We hold this event to give the town’s visitors, a chance to see a piece of art work come together from start to finish.  It’s not too often someone gets a chance to see that happen in a such a short amount of time”.
Last year, 2015, was the inaugural year and welcomed 33 participants competing for $600 in cash prizes! This year, 2016, there were 48 participants competing for $1200 in cash prizes!! Mat About you Custom Framing and Gallery, Ellicott City Partnership and Chesapeake Fine Art Studio all donated toward the cash prizes.
Winners from the “Paint Down Main” Quick Draw;
1st Place “Main Street Ellicott City” by Alison Leigh Menke
2nd Place “Little House, Big Woods” by Courtney E. Lee
3rd Place “Wired” by Ray Ewing
Top Non-Juried “Tiber River Under Parking Lot” by Jane Knighton
Honorable Mentions:
-“Old Columbia Pike” by Tara Will
-“Ask Not” by Joanna Burnum
-“Tiger & Blues” by Ann Crostic
-“Tongue Row” by Deborah Cole
-Under 18 Winner “Oriental Rugs” by Ashley Hof
-Under 18 Honorable Mentions, “Park” by Laila Lowery and “City Shop” by Jonathan Storch
-People’s Choice “Old Columbia Pike” by Tara Will
This is one of the many cultural events held in Historic Ellicott City throughout the year. I am looking forward to having our street back and rockin’ the events again!
As I walked around the Quick Draw boundaries, searching for painters, I was in complete awe with what I saw.  Each painter interpreted their views so differently and every single one of them, so magnificently. I loved seeing the many different techniques the artists displayed, the different interpretations of the same landscape. The unique color choices, some muted, some vibrant. Yet they all had something in common, they each produced incredible and beautiful pieces of art.
I hope you enjoy these photos.
Thank you to everyone involved! Hope to see you next year!
5th Anniversary of Power of the Purse – 2016 – A HUGE Success!
14 07 2016
POTP-5th-anniversary-web1
On Monday, June 13th, Blossoms of Hope held their fifth annual Power of the Purse silent auction and sale. This wonderful event was held in support of the Claudia Mayer/Tina Broccolino Cancer Resource Center at Howard County General Hospital. For the past five years this event has courteously been held at the Sub-Zero and Wolf Showroom by Fretz, located in Columbia.
2016 POTP Pam Long Photography (61 of 191)
In 2015 over 1,400 gently used and vintage purses were generously donated from individuals all over the state. As 2016 approached, goals and ambitions of collecting more bags were higher than ever. With great pride, I am able to say this year over 2,900 purses were donated and the event received more than $50,000 in donations from local businesses for the Silent Auction! This event is largely remarkable in the way it brings the community together.
There is no better person to bring camaraderie and resources to events than Michelle Wildman, owner of MW Events, a 16-year old business that specializes in Galas, fundraisers, and uniquely entertaining parties. Michelle was this year’s Chairperson for the Power of the Purse and worked countless hours for the past year preparing for this successful fundraiser. You’ve heard the expression, “if you want to get something done, give it to a busy person”?  Michelle surrounded herself with busy, organized and helpful volunteers that she guided throughout the process with informative and detailed emails, ensuring great communication. Michelle organized meetings, luncheons, and creative get togethers throughout the year to continually keep everyone informed and excited. These get togethers weren’t opportunities to only mingle, Michelle had a purpose for each scheduled date, checking items off her major list each month! The words AMAZING, TREMENDOUS, RESOURCEFUL, CONVINCING ;-), INCREDIBLE only begin to describe Michelle and her giving heart and brilliant mind!
Below, Michelle is pictured with her awesome and supportive family. 🙂
Michelle is not one to bring attention to herself, she lifts everyone up around her, “Last year we had 16 volunteers, and this year the team grew to 50 wonderfully hard-working women! The success of Power of the Purse directly correlates to the enthusiasm and dedication of these ladies, who took time away from their families to support such an important cause. I enjoyed hosting fun activities and outings in addition to our meetings, and it was a pleasure to watch new friendships form while we learned about one another’s businesses and passions.
Thanks to such a fabulous team, our 5th anniversary event welcomed more than 500 attendees, and not only beat our fundraising goal, but nearly doubled it, bringing in $36,000 to benefit Blossoms of Hope! Over the past 11 years, Blossoms has donated over $275,000 to the Claudia Mayer/Tina Broccolino Cancer Resource Center, and we look forward to adding to that total after this year’s success.”                                                              2016 POTP Pam Long Photography (72 of 191)
Working hand in hand with this event for the fifth year in a row is The Iron Bridge Wine Co. who provided the attendees with a tasteful assortment of both red and white wines. Alongside the wines, this years event had a tasty signature cocktail called the “Purse-onalitini” made of a special and tasty secret recipe, provided by Clever Container. Following drinks, Carrabba’s Italian Grill filled the air with delicious aromas featuring shrimp lightly drizzled in a lemon butter sauce, penne pasta with fresh tomato red sauce, Chicken Marsala and many other mouth watering treats. Not only did Carrabba’s have a counter full of these amazing dishes, but throughout the event servers made their way around the room to serve hors d’oeuvres, appetizers and then desserts.
Celebrating the wonderful Tersiguel family!
9 07 2015
If you have been to Tersiguel’s French Country Restaurant, then you know how amazing their fabulous cuisine is! In fact, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary of being in business this Saturday! I am thrilled and honored to be photographing this auspicious, sold out, event. We are all so excited about this major milestone and their outstanding accomplishment in Historic Ellicott City.
The founders of Tersiguel’s, Fernand and Odette Tersiguel, are amazing people and I’ve enjoyed getting to know them.  They are an incredible example of the benefits of hard work and determination. They came to the United States in 1963.  In 1980, they opened Chez Fernand on Main Street.  Sadly, the successful Chez Fernand burned to the ground in the fire of 1984.   Fernand and Odette persevered and  re-opened Chez Fernand in downtown Baltimore.   Fortunately for us, they wanted to return to their beloved Ellicott City and Tersiguel’s opened it’s doors, in it’s current location, in October of 1990.
Chef Michel is a 1984 graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in New York. After his time in New York, he worked in Baltimore, with his family, he also worked in France and in California (with Michael Chiarello) and later served as Chef de Cuisine at Left Bank in Larskpur.  In 1997, he returned to Ellicott City to take over as Executive Chef and owner of Tersiguel’s.
In addition to valuing and serving magnificent food, they also value family and preserving family history. I had the honor of photographing three generations of Tersiguel’s: Fernand and Odette, their son, Michel and his incredible wife, Angie, and their two beautiful boys; Lucas and Landon. What an fun morning portrait session we had, it was such a glorious day! I was fortunate enough to have Lauren Ward assist me on this sunny day with this very special family. We were inspired by an family photograph of Fernand and Odette taken on their wedding day, in 1963. (They just celebrated 52 years of marriage!) Congratulations! So, we, too, took a family portrait, and used Tersiguel’s as the backdrop. We also created portraits of this beautiful family inside Tersiguel’s, in the Brit dining room. The Brit is short for the Brittany Room. This refers to the region that Fernand and Odette are from. The dishes in this room are called Quimper. That is also the name of the city in which they are made.  Angie shared with me that Quimpler is one of the coolest places she’s been (perhaps that could be the location of your next family portrait session…..I travel 😉 ).  Be sure to view their story and history via their lovely portraits, as they are displayed throughout their restaurant.
Tersiguel’s French Country Restaurant is located at 8293 Main Street, Ellicott City, MD.  Be sure to visit and dine in this delicious  restaurant, voted Best French Restaurant in Howard County, Maryland.  This is definitely a restaurant that your meal time will become a wonderful dining experience and you’ll leave with delightful memories. Tersiguel’s has been the perfect setting for countless birthday celebrations, weddings, anniversaries, graduation festivities, business functions…..imagine if THOSE walls could talk, what an extraordinary story they would tell.
To Fernand, Odette, Michel, Angie, Lucas and Landon, thank you for allowing me the privilege of spending time with you, to get to know you better, and to document more of your family history, what a great honor. I enjoyed my time with you and look forward to enjoying many more great moments together!
To the entire staff, past and present, of Tersiguel’s, thank you for continuing to strive for the best.  You really help provide memorable moments for your dining guests, thank you.
I hope you enjoy these family portraits that we created together.
Until next time, au revoir and bon appetit!
Viking Fest 2015 – Mt Hebron celebrates their 50th Anniversary!
5 04 2015
Hello, friends!  Special treat for you! I asked my friend, Michelle Wildman, to be my guest blogger today. Michelle has worked behind the scenes for the Mt Hebron Viking Fest for months, and I knew she’d have a wonderful perspective.  I hope you enjoy…..
Mt. Hebron High School was turning 50 and Lisa Scarbath had an idea!
As President of the Viking Backers Booster Club, Lisa wanted to create a special event to thank the Mt. Hebron community, while simultaneously generating funds for the many sports, groups, and clubs that the Viking Backers support within the school.
And voila – Viking Fest was born!
Enlisting the help of three of her “Event Planning” friends who happened to have children enrolled at MTH, Lisa met with Lee Draminski, Paula Shane, and Michelle Wildman to brainstorm about the exciting party details.
Lisa knew that Misspent Youth, Maryland’s top party rock band, would be a huge draw for the community, and Michelle knew that Outback Steakhouse would provide a delicious dinner, so they were quickly brought on board.  St. John’s Parish  Day School provided our exceptionally beautiful venue.
The ladies implemented a Holiday Viking Fest party to ask (beg/plead/bribe!) other MTH parents to join their committee, and to “adopt” many basket themes that would help to promote the Silent Auction.
Planning a fundraising event for 400 people is not unlike planning a wedding…but it’s a wedding where everything gets donated, and the bride and groom offer gifts to their guests instead of the other way around! Luckily, the team was up for the challenge.
They met with Mt. Hebron High School’s Principal Scott Ruehl, who couldn’t have been more supportive. MTH alum Bob Lucido of The Bob Lucido Team graciously agreed to be Viking Fest’s Presenting Sponsor. Lisa Mazzuca, Rodan+Fields Independent Consultant and Adam Stull of State Farm Ins. were also very generous in their Sponsorships!
MTH parent Donna Detweiler, owner of Pro-Outsource, donated her time to create our promotional materials, which were printed by Sponsor Vince Sharps and his fabulous team at Sir Speedy BWI. And we were ALL overjoyed when the amazingly talented, creative, and personable Pam Long, of Pam Long Photography agreed to photograph this event!  Andy Guerin, whose parents own Schuler School of Fine Arts,  whipped up our Viking Fest mural with lightning speed was very generous with his time and talent!  Many other Sponsors and Donors offered discounts and fabulous auction items, and we were overwhelmingly grateful – I wish I had room here to name each and every one of them.
Of course, the event was not without its challenges (SNOW? Really?). Trying to schedule meetings when the majority of the committee was available was like herding cats in a tornado. Full-time jobs, trips, kids’ sporting events and family emergencies added a touch of…excitement?!…to our implementation.
The most fascinating challenge revolved around the day (Friday) and the venue, both thoughtfully chosen. How could we get 350 children OUT of the school and 400+ adults INTO the school in a mere 3 hours? Not to mention the tables, centerpieces, auction items, decorations, Shutterbooth, and bars that needed to be set up?!
This is where we have to offer a HUGE shout-out to St. John’s Parish Day School.
As luck would have it, Michelle has a daughter enrolled in that school as well, and had worked on their Galas for the last 8 years, so she knew a few shortcuts. But nothing could have been achieved as easily without the flexibility and cooperation of Head of School Tiffany Nichols and the rest of the marvelous staff at SJPDS.
As one of our treasured Sponsors, they relocated dismissal and classes, loaned us items, and were an absolute pleasure to work with. They even allowed us access to the building early, so we could unload and start blowing up 1200 balloons!
Yes, I said one thousand, two hundred balloons, the majority of which were blown up using air as opposed to helium. (Luckily we were able to borrow air pumps so we could save our own “hot air” for the event!) 😀 The marvelous Jill Alli, also a MTH parent, spearheaded this effort and created beautiful towers and sculptures to add panache and color to the venue. Our children of all ages were enlisted to help, along with Hebron’s National Honor Society volunteers and numerous spouses and parents.
The excitement and energy during Viking Fest was palpable, and the guests enjoyed catching up with old friends, making new ones, and celebrating our 50th Anniversary!
One of the most popular offerings was our signature “Viketini” Martini, created by the Four Seasons’ own Aaron Joseph. His passion for mixology has earned him numerous awards, as well as a spot on WBAL-TV this morning! (It may have also contributed to the lowered inhibitions of guests who donned Viking Helmets and balloon sculptures as headgear by night’s end.) 🙂
County Executive Allan Kittleman was our VIP guest, who arrived with a proclamation for the school, and stayed long enough to help us put away tables and chairs at the end. Howard County is blessed to have such a resourceful and helpful man in office.
The event ended at 10pm, when Viking Fest-ers were prompted to continue the party at The Cellar at Chef Paolino Cafe,  where Lisa Passalacqua and her accommodating staff pampered and spoiled us, then donated a portion of their sales back to the school!
Viking Fest would not have been nearly as successful without the wonderful community of friends, volunteers, and supporters that surround Mt. Hebron High School. We may have asked a lot of you, but because of YOUR generosity we are able to give more than $25,000 back to the school and its children. And that’s quite an Anniversary gift.
Cheers to kicking off the next 50 years with a bang!
Thank you, Michelle, for writing the wonderful blogpost.  You and the entire committee were so focused, resourceful, energetic and very well organized to pull off such a successful event for Mt Hebron High School.  Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us as you wrote this post.  To the committee members, all of the volunteers, the sponsors, the businesses that donated service and products for your auction, St John’s Parish Day School, Shutterbooth, Outback Steakhouse, THANK YOU!  Truly a community effort that resulted in a fun evening and a phenomenal fundraiser!  Personally, for me, it was fantastic watching everyone have a great time together, definitely fun to document this outstanding event.  I was elated to see parents of some of my high school seniors that I’ve photographed in the past, it was like seeing family again! It was also a pleasure to meet many other Mt Hebron alumni! I hope I have the chance to see you all again! 🙂
I hope you enjoy the images!
Historic Ellicott City’s Midnight Madness…..so FUN!
17 12 2014
Greetings all! This is Tracy, Pam’s sidekick writing to you. We’ve been looking forward to sharing our experience of Ellicott City’s Midnight Madness this year! Wow! What a fantastic night! Despite the drizzling rain, we had a wonderful turnout! Thank you to all the awesome people that came to visit us at our studio, Pam Long Photography! We were graced with the presence of some local politicians- Alan Kittleman, Jon Weinstein and Courtney Watson!  They jovially participated in our fun photo booth! Check out our awesome pictures of these wonderful people!
Pam took some beautiful photographs of the annual tree lighting at the Howard County Visitors Center. The weather was no deterrent for the impressive crowd that came to witness this Historic Ellicott City tree lighting.  The stores were full of shoppers up and down Main Street! Journey for Junk was standing room only! There was a very festive air on the street that night that was contagious to all! We were hoping to be able to run up and down Main Street, taking photographs in each of the wonderful stores and restaurants, however, the good news is, we were too busy with beautiful visitors to leave the studio. Yea! Go Pam Long Photography! We were so happy to see many of our treasured clients and friends and were thrilled to meet many new people!
Hello Santa Claus! The Thomas Isaac Log Cabin, located on Upper Main Street, near the Wine Bin, was where Santa was visiting sweet little children at his satellite workshop. We love Santa! How wonderful!
The incredibly talented Madrigal Singers from both Mt. Hebron and Long Reach High Schools filled the night with beautiful music – Christmas carols that also filled me with joy and peace. We were also graced to hear The Pride of Baltimore Chorus! What a gift these ladies have! These talented women opened the evening, singing during the lighting of the Christmas tree. Thank you all for singing for us – what a blessing it was to all of us here in Ellicott City.
To all of our well-loved clients and friends – old and new – we loved spending time with you and creating adorable photos in our PLP photo booth. Thank you for the opportunity to photograph you and your families and for the gift of your friendship. We wish you a very safe and peaceful Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
What’s going on in Ellicott City and Howard County?
26 11 2014
Happy Thanksgiving to you all! We hope that you have a wonderful holiday – filled with lots of love and good food! (full bellies and full hearts) 🙂
There are several exciting things happening in Ellicott City and Howard County that I wanted to let you know about:
There are a couple of local Turkey Trots that I thought you might be interested in! The Turkey Trot Charity 5K sponsored by the The Dancel Family Center Y  at 8:30am starting at Long Gate Parkway.  We participated in this last year and will be there again tomorrow….wish it would be like this past Monday’s nice, balmy weather…but we will manage. 😉
Another fun option is the 11th annual 5K and 1 mile run at Catonsville High School. All proceeds benefit CHS Cross Country Program and the philanthropic causes they support.  Our friends at Portalli’s and the Diamondback Tavern are sponsoring this great event. Come join the fun and burn some calories before the big feast!
If you’re participating in the Turkey Trots, don’t forget to record the Macy’s Day Parade! 🙂
Turkey Trot CHS
Everyone loves contributing to Toys for Tots! We are an official drop off location.  So, if you are local or just venturing down to Historic Elllicott City for some fabulous shopping, you can help bring joy to an underprivileged child by donating a toy that they will receive for Christmas this year! You can gift this gift card to a loved one or use it for yourself for beautiful portraits. Pam is an international award winning photographer and was voted Howard County’s Best Photographer for 2013!  In addition, the Salon Marielle, also located on Main Street in Ellicott City, is offering gift cards for 20% off your next color treatment with your donations! 2 Miles for 2 Hearts, Memorial Race this Saturday in Historic Ellicott City
11 08 2014
Reserve the morning of AUGUST 16th on your calendar and head over to the 2 Miles for 2 Hearts website by clicking here to sign up for a great race! Just over 48 hours until online registration closes. All those that register before 8/12 at 11:59 pm are eligible for approximately 40 great raffle prizes such as jewelry, gift cards, hair cuts, restaurant gift certificates. And anyone that participates will have plenty of food from: Ledo’s, UNO’s, TBonz, Eggspectation, Einstein bagels, Starbucks coffee, Wine Bin beer and Rock n Roll from BadMoon! Don’t miss out. All of you walkers, runners, moms, dads, daughters, sons, aunts, uncles, grandpas, grandmas, students, employers, employees, business owners, politicians, please check out this wonderful opportunity to participate in a race to benefit a tremendous cause.  In August of 2012, two amazing young ladies lives were ended when a train derailed in Historic Ellicott City. I did not have the pleasure of knowing Elizabeth “Liz” Nass and Rose Mayr personally, but after hearing wonderful sentiments about them from many of my high school seniors and some of my family portrait clients, I sure wish I had.
2 Miles for 2 Hearts is a memorial race that will benefit two scholarship funds while celebrating Liz Nass and Rose Mayr lives. This race is a chance for families, friends and the community to celebrate these 2 beautiful young ladies lives while incorporating music, exercise and food….some of their favorite things!
Mollie Reese and her sister, Bridget, participated in the race last year and Mollie shared with me, “We wanted to do the race in memory of Rose and Liz as they were both on the Lancer Drill Team during their time at Mount Hebron. As Lancers ourselves, we wanted to gather all of our current and past teammates and walk in support and remembrance of them and their talent in dance. It was such an amazing event to be a part of and to see so much of the community come out to support these girls and their families. We enjoyed seeing Mount Hebron students, alumni, parents, and other community members come together for a great cause and create something powerful in the girls memory.”
I did not know Rose and Liz, but I will say that I was shocked last year by the community support – even by people who did not know them. It showed how the community comes together in a time of crisis and memorial. I actually noticed this right after we moved here (with my own health scare). It’s nice to see that people support one another and hold people true in the hearts.” Marcie Lovell, a race participant from last year.
Last years runners were entertained by the Federal Hillbillies and the Highland Hill Boys. They were incredibly talented and fun to listen to.  During this years celebration,  participants and volunteers will rock and roll with Bad Moon, be sure to check them out! 🙂
Rusty Allwein, the Race Co-Coordinator, wrote last year after the race, “When Chip and I first talked about putting on a run for Liz and Rose there was no way in the world we could have envisioned the day we had yesterday – so incredible!  And while we have a lot of experience in participating in events, putting one together was something we’ve had minimal experience in doing.  It took so many people to pull this together and working with each person was such a great experience.  It’s amazing what a network of determined people can do – and we did so well we have to do it again!
In the days before the event I was listening to a song – “Times Like These” by the Foo Fighters and part of the lyrics struck me as appropriate for the event –
it’s times like these you learn to live again
it’s times like these you give and give again
it’s times like these you learn to love again
it’s times like these time and time again
I am really honored and glad to have been a part of 2 Miles for 2 Hearts.”
Not able to run? Be sure to volunteer! Out of town?  Okay, then like their event on FB or share the link to their website.  Links to register for either the run or to volunteer are on the website.
 Some important information and links:
We hope to see you this Saturday!  Come out and celebrate these 2 beautiful young ladies.  Plenty of food, live music and beer!
Following are a handful of some race pictures from last year.  We will continue adding more pictures throughout the next couple of days. Hope you enjoy.
THANK YOU to everyone that had a hand in coordinating this wonderful event and to all of the participants.  My thoughts and prayers continue to be with the families and friends of Rose and Liz.
Why is Historic Ellicott City’s Main Street worthy of being a Cover Story in Parade Magazine?
1 07 2014
Ellicott City Pam Long Photography blog
Parade Magazine is sponsoring a contest to see which of the incredible Main Streets throughout the US will be featured in a cover story at the end of the summer.  Ellicott City is currently in the top 16, 8,  Final 4!  We hope that you consider to place your vote with Ellicott City’s Main Street.  Please go here to vote: http://www.parade.com/mainstreet There are numerous reasons that Historic Ellicott City’s Main Street should be featured and grace the cover of Parade Magazine. It’s rich in history and culture, the community is comprised of residents, business owners and building owners that work together for the good of the town. Throughout the year, locals and out-of-towners can enjoy our wonderful Spring and Fall Festivals, Music Fests, Art Walks, Girls Night Out, First Friday celebrations, Midnight Madness….to name a few. 🙂 Our beautiful Main Street is lined with unique shops, boutiques, salons, artist’s studios and restaurants.  I’ve enjoyed Ellicott City’s Main Street for many years, and it’s always been one of the first places I bring out of town visitors. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to move my photography studio there 2 years ago and thoroughly enjoy working with the other business owners and residents of this unique town. Our friendly Main Street has an eclectic group of people that enjoy it daily!  I’m very proud to be a part of this charming town.  I could go on and on telling you why you should consider voting for our Main Street, but I would like you to hear from some of the other residents, visitors, employees and business owners, as to why Ellicott City’s Main Street should be THE Main Street for the Parade Magazine’s cover story.
I love being part of a business on Main Street, Ellicott City! First of, it’s beautiful, even more so since Benjamin Moore gave the storefronts a make-over in vibrant colors. I love the old stone buildings, secret gardens you can just glimpse behind iron gates, and impossibly narrow passageways between houses. You can see that the place is historic and proud of it. It’ s an exciting little town, too. There are Art Events, Music Festivals, a Farmers Market with great food, movie nights, First Fridays and Girls Night Out events. There are also historical tours, ghost walks ( the whole town is haunted), Shakespeare plays and Civil War re-enactments at the Railroad Museum. There’s always something to do or see. I love the people, too. There’s a nice mix of residents aand business owners that are committed to preserving the town’s heritage as well as helping it to grow. They’re friendly and care about each other and their town. There’s a lot of energy and enthusiasm in Ellicott City, and it’s fun to be a part of it!  ~Sue O’Connor, The Wine Bin
There is so much to see and do on Ellicott City’s Main Street. There seems to be something new to discover every time I go. I always look forward to seeing the Bubble Man spreading joy with his colorful soapy creations, checking out the little vintage shops and specialty stores, sitting streetside for a bite to eat and taking in the art, history and culture that makes Main Street so special. I love coming to Ellicott City and as a lifelong Marylander, Ellicott City’s Historic Main Street will always be one of my favorite places to spend an afternoon.  ~Kim Lynch
The B&O Railroad Museum, located in Ellicott City is the oldest surviving railroad station in America!
Main Street is very unique and they have stores that you wouldn’t really find anywhere else.  That’s why Ellicott City’s Main Street is so special to me!  ~Hayley, age 10
Coming from a relatively small town in Pennsylvania, I truly appreciate and respect when residents come together to embrace their Main Street communities. Nowhere is this type of adoration shown more than in historic Ellicott City. From the camaraderie of merchants to the collaboration displayed among local government and residents in good times and bad, Main Street Ellicott City represents much more than a street, it is a sense of who we are and what we want to become. We value history but we recognize that progress is a good thing. My husband and I absolutely love patronizing the restaurants and shops that dot this truly unique community–and whenever we have friends and family over to visit, it is the first destination for us to show off. We look forward to seeing historic Ellicott City thrive year after year as it continues to bring people from all walks together and demonstrates why community matters.  ~Sam O’Neill
Ellicott City’s Main St is not only historical and charming, but it has great natural beauty. Nestled between two rivers and rolling hills, it features interesting shops, wine pubs and restaurants.  ~Sara Arditti, owner of Still Life Gallery
Ellicott City has a soul. Its history and current vibrancy make you feel like the place is bigger than the buildings and concrete. The people who live, work, and play in Ellicott City have an unspoken attachment to one another simply by loving a certain place. We may not always agree on everything, but we all want to see Ellicott City thrive.  ~Tom Coale
Ellicott City’s Main Street hosted the Ellicott City Volunteer Fire Department’s 125 Anniversary Parade…
 Ellicott City Fire Dept Parade magazine
What makes Ellicott City Special? How can you quantify it? Do you talk about the ancient stone, quarried from our own hills, used to build most of the buildings? Do you talk of the past, a town known for the mills and mill-workers that populated it, founded before our Country broke off on its own? Do you talk about the churches that dot the hillsides, overlooking a Main Street built next the river and rail line (the first rail line!) that was the bread and butter of the people living here?
History like that is fascinating. But what makes Ellicott City special, is that its history is still alive today.
It’s not just a place for preserving the past, held together behind glass to keep it safe. It lives. It’s a community of residents, shopkeepers and visitors who create an energy, a life and a bustle in the town. The dedication and love of these people are what preserves the history here. These people have refused to let developers turn the wood siding into modern plastics, small businesses into chain stores, and old, quirky buildings into personality-less office buildings.
Each day in Ellicott City, the past meets with the present. Delicious coffee is brewed in a building that was once a funeral home, and goods are for sale in an old opera house. Tongue row, one legend says, got its name from women who would lean out the windows and wag their tongues at each other all day. People fill those buildings still, and actually talk to each other every day.
It’s a fight to live and work here. Historic floods have decimated the town, poor economic turns have shadowed parts of Ellicott City’s past. The stones try to return to the ground from which they came, the waters try to rise up and the hills encroach. Developers look at Ellicott City and see dollar signs. Landlords are always tempted by that chain store, looking for a way to elbow itself into this slice of America’s past. But the community holds together, keeping the town clean, fresh, exciting, healthy and true. It’s a place where you can walk down the street, and say hello to people who genuinely care about you. Shopkeepers know you by name, residents know their neighbors, and visitors are always welcome.
My husband and I were married in St. Paul’s Church, which we walked to every week. Years later, our son was baptized there. Our photographer has her shop on Main Street; we pass it when we walk to Church. After church, we walk through the bustle of the town, always saying hello to the owner of Forget Me Not Factory, (“The Bubble Man”, as he is often affectionately known, for the impressive soap bubbles he blows for the kids), and have coffee at the local shop. Sometimes we’ll stop at the French Cafe for fresh-baked bread afterwards. Our home is full of furniture, decor and antiques from the shops around town, and we still keep in touch with neighbors who have moved away. When the snows were piled 3 feet high in 2010, we walked down to the bars. Judge’s Bench was open, because the owners or the bartender lived in walking distance. Our neighbors drank together and helped each other through the storm. It’s a simple, fulfilling lifestyle, and one very much like the people who lived here a hundred years ago. Because the history of Ellicott City isn’t just to be looked at; it’s alive. It’s meant to be lived and experienced and loved. ~ Steeny Benkowski
Barry, The Bubbleman, is a favorite on Main Street.
It is easy to get around and it has my most favorite store “All Time Toys”, La Palapa is there and I love their food, and who wouldn’t love a town that celebrates the origins of the railroad? ~Andrew, age 11
I have been coming to Main Street, Ellicott City ever since I was a kid. I love the beauty of the town and the quaintness that it still has even with the hustle and bustle right down the road! When you walk down Main Street you feel like you are stepping back in time. Through the devastating fires and floods over the years, Ellicott City has never failed to rebuild and keep the town as it has always been. The store owners treat everyone like family…when you go into a store it feels the same as if you were visiting a close friend. I love the food…they have everything from casual or quick service to more elegant dining options. Portallis is one of my favorite places to go for date night, the atmosphere is just as wonderful as the food they serve! The beauty of Ellicott City changes with the seasons making it a special place to visit year round. Local merchant Pam Long Photography embraces the beauty of Ellicott City as backdrops for many of her portraits. My family is looking forward to brining home a little piece of Ellicott City in a family portrait this fall! I love that the town is so pet friendly! I love knowing that you can take your dog with you and the merchants have water bowls out for them. I especially love the pet store, Work.Play.Bark, we go in there every couple of months to pick up the latest and greatest collars (I am a freak…I change Barley’s collar for the holidays!) because of him I even came home and made a few collars. ~Kristen Coffee
I like the way the river goes under some of the shops and the rocks edge the sidewalks. When I go to Ellicott City I just feel happy. It is so cool when you stand under the train tracks and look up the street. It is a fun place to go with friends because there is always something new to see. ~Elizabeth, age 13
Ellicott City’s Main Street is truly a unique and charming gem.  What makes this particular Main Street extraordinarily special is it’s history and natural setting.  The B&O railroad and museum at the end of the street, against the Tiber River, the whole street lined with granite walls, hundreds of years old, pushing into the streets in little beautiful shaded corners, keep the Old World feeling going throughout the entire street.
The shops are truly eclectic and unique with funky clothing, jewelry, art, unique toys and gifts and excellent bistros and bars interspersed with modern needs provided by small, hands-on merchants and service-providers.  Main Street is a paradise for the entire family and a mecca which we are blessed to call home in Ellicott City. ~Lisa Markovitz
Since 1772, rising like a phoenix from several disaters (floods, fires, war and wrecks) Ellicott City Main Street is a Civil War and “The Goddess” Hollywood movie star that shines today retaining our local color as Charm City’s sister.
At Suze Makeup Studio we go from the Red Carpet to the White House to the real world. Although we have big connections to Hollywood and the Capital of the free world in DC, we like to slow down and connect with our local community through small business. On Ellicott City Main Street, people can stroll along the historical sidewalks, experience a bygone world and escape from modern daily life. ~Suze Heydt, Suze Makeup Studio
Main Street has a wonderful variety of shops and boutiques from which to shop….
So where do I start about Ellicott City,  my first memories go back to  the early sixty’s  when I would ride with my Grandfather John Baker on his many stops collecting rent from his more than 30 apartments. From River Road in Baltimore County, Mulligan’s Hill along the rail road tracks, ( I remember delivering a box of toys and presents with my Grandfather one Christmas to children who lived there, donated by the Ellicott City Lions Club) , lower Main Street, Weaver’s Court , Merryman Street, West End , Fell’s Avenue. It was a weekly trip for me and I learned many skills from him while growing up. Ellicott City then is still the same today in many ways, the buildings look the same, new businesses may occupy them, but the outside appearance is the same today as it was 40 years ago. The merchants  are as friendly and helpful now as they were then. There is no big box store or chain restaurant  feeling when shopping or eating in Ellicott City.   My wife and I  enjoy coming to Ellicott City almost every Friday night to have a well prepared meal in a relaxed atmosphere at one of the many fine restaurants there. The variety is endless, from French, Mexican, Italian, American, Casual to dress up. There is no reason to go anywhere else. I could go on and on about the charm I find when visiting Ellicott City and want to mention one more before I finish. The calming beautiful chimes that come from the Emory Methodist Church , anyone who has a had a stressful day need only stop and Liston  to the beautiful sounds. I guarantee you will feel better afterwards. ~Ron Peters
I’ve been visiting Main Street since the 90s when I participated in poetry readings at Riverside ( now Bean Hollow) and playing gigs at th little theatre on the corner. What I love about Ellicott city is it’s physical beauty, it’s history, and the vibrancy of the people that live and work here. There’s no other place like it around. You can’t plan a town like this and I’m lucky to be able to work here now. ~Dee Cunningham, owner of Deelite Design
Ellicott City’s community is committed to preserving it’s past while preparing for it’s future. We have banded together to polish this Maryland gem and promote all that is has to offer – rich history for our town, state and Country (1st passenger rail station, greater Ellicott City is still home to the family of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence), great art, amazing antiques, fantastic restaurants, and a myriad of specialty boutiques that all combine in this wonderful place! ~Jon Weinstein
When I first came to Main Street on a date 17 years ago, I fell in love with the place as we walked up and down the street going into the unique shops and walking down by the river. For several years after that, I visited often and kept thinking that I would love to live here.  I would drive up and hang out with the Tuesday night happy hour crowd in the basement of the Ellicott Mill Brewing Company and everyone would yell your name when you walked in the door.  Really, that happens.  Years later, I finally got that spot on Main Street and haven’t left since.  I couldn’t imagine ever living anywhere else.  You can’t walk up or down the street without someone yelling your name or waving at you as they drive by.  There is such a strong sense of community especially when it really matters, like pulling together for some unexpected flood or a train derailment, and helping out those in need.  Some see it as a destination but I see it as a home.  I love living here and all the people I get to interact with. For over 6 years, my bedroom window was over this stream in Tiber Park and there is nothing more soothing than sleeping to the sound of the stream that runs through and under our town. ~Peter Edelen
My mother moved us to Howard County when I was nine. I loved Main street as a child. I moved onto main street when I was 20, lived there for four years. I loved my time in Old Ellicott City and moving on was bitter sweet. I am very fortunate to still work on Main Street. It feels like home. In just three traffic lights there are countless bar/restaurants that always have some sort or special or entertainment every night of the week (open mic nights, comedy night etc.), three salons, photographer studios, makeup studio, all ages yoga studio, hands on pottery, skate shop/record store, coffee shops, hookah bar and last but not least all the amazing shopping. A vintage/antique lovers heaven! The Spring Fest/Fall Fest and December’s Midnight Madness are three huge, full street participation festivals that happen once a year. But there is also a First Friday and a Third Thursday (Girls Night Out) celebration that happen every month! The street is always alive with music and art and expression for every age group. Main Street Ellicott City is an amazing place to live, relax, play music, eat, drink and explore. ~Lauren Ward, singer, songwriter, hair stylist
We house many of the finest artists in the world! The hairdressers at Ooh lal Lal are fantastic! Pam Long is the best photographer and Sweet Elizabeth Jane is the bomb! And what a fun place to hang! There are bars and restaurants all up and down the street. There is a fabulous Wine Bar and small plate restaurant. And there is always something going on like open mic night and comedy nights. I also love the outdoor spring and fall festivals with live bands and entertainment for the whole family! ~Sheela Lal, Owner of Ooh La Lal
H. L. Mencken, the American journalist, essayist, magazine editor, satirist and critic, spent the summers of 1889 and 1890 in Ellicott City, between the ages of eight and ten. He and his family stayed at the house now called The Vineyard, at 3611 Church Road. Like many people, they probably cut through the Howard House (ca. 1800), and up three flights of stairs, as a short cut. Young Mencken often made a trip to Kraft’s butcher shop for a ration of pork chops. The Kraft’s operated out of the granite-based Lauman House (ca. 1800) that became Alda Baptiste Castaldi’s specialty dress shop for thirty years and later the Obladi, the first hotel in Ellicott City since the 1950s. On one of these frequent trips young Mencken ventured out onto the second floor porch that stretched along all the buildings to the railway line. It was press day at the Ellicott Times office, and the young Mencken immediately became smitten with a life of journalism.  ~Ken McNaughton
What makes Ellicott City a cover story town? In a word, everything. Main Street is made up of more than stone buildings, trains, haunts and history, though all of those things are an integral part of our town. It’s made up of memories. In my case, two decades worth. My love affair with this eclectic historic town began in high school and has continued while working for my family’s business Salon Marielle. The doors and hearts of this town are always open. From First Fridays to Farmers Markets, museums to art galleries, there is always something to do or see. Our unique blend of retail, restaurants and residents continues to grow and with it our sense of pride and community. The people who live and work here come together in a way I haven’t seen anywhere else. With a can do spirit and a smile on their face people pitch in to maintain our parks and creeks and even volunteer their time at the many festivals and events throughout the year. I can’t imagine spending my days any where else! ~Rachel Rawlings, Salon Marielle and Author
When I first moved to the area about 8 years, downtown Ellicott City was one of the first places I had really visited. I loved the historic Main Street; it reminded me of an area in PA where I had lived. I immediately felt right at home with the quaint shops and old treasures. Now after almost 3 years, I feel very lucky to get to come to work here everyday. Ellicott City is like my second home. ~Tanya Crouse, A Journey from Junk
